Rappahannock County- a beautiful enclave at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia and just an hour from DC- offers something for everyone!
Performing and visual artists flock to Rappahannock for the joy of sharing with other like-minded folk, and for the inspiration they derive from this peaceful, natural setting. The Theatre at Little Washington , Rappahannock Association for Arts and the Community and Ki Theatre provide a multitude of creative opportunities for all of us.
Are you a horse enthusiast? Fox hunting is a popular pastime for many in our small community. Old Dominion Hounds and Thornton Hill Hounds welcome new members in their quest to help the sport flourish.
Rare is the resident who does not care about the environment. After all, isn’t that why we live here? Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection, Piedmont Environmental Council and RappFLOW invite volunteers to participate in public-awareness and hands-on events throughout the year – all aimed at protecting the pristine landscape of our county.
Virginia, as the Mother of Presidents, is historical by nature, and Rappahannock houses much of that history! Washington, our county seat was surveyed by young George, and Civil War battles were fought across our county. Stop by the Rappahannock Historical Society, rapphistsoc@comcast.net , and conduct any research you desire. The volunteers are most helpful.
If the broad vistas and open farmland appeal to you, thank Rappahannock County Conservation Alliance, rcca1@earthlink.net . They work diligently to help landowners put their land in Conservation Easements through the Virginia Outdoors Foundation. They would appreciate your support.
Our Rappahannock County Public Schools are small but impressive, consistently sending students to regional and state competitions in academics, athletics, technology and the arts! They get tremendous support from Headwaters-the Rappahannock County Public School Foundation, the School Sports Association and the Band Boosters. Rappahannock is also home to private schools, including Wakefield Country Day School, offering a classical education, and Hearthstone School, with a more Waldorf-centered program.
We are proud of our community’s activities for children. 4-H in Rappahannock is a thriving entity. They provide clubs and camps for kids of all ages. Rappahannock Soccer League, Rappahannock Athletic Association and Piedmont Softball Association provide opportunities for kids to stay fit year round. The Fitness Center at RCHS is open to the public for a nominal fee. Suzanne Zylonis offers pottery lessons, and Lyt Wood hosts a phenomenal nature camp each summer. Belle Meade's summer camp series is always a popular option.
Rappahannock Wines win accolades both nationally and internationally. We’re proud of our wineries and encourage you visit any or all of them. Should you decide to spend a day touring, allow me to recommend Gary Ford, limo driver extraordinaire! Gadino Cellars is family-owned and bottles a wonderful Cab Franc! Chester Gap Cellars is our newest winery (I taught their son!). They are getting rave reviews!
Orchards, nurseries, pick-your-own farms abound here. Williams Orchard, Muskrat Haven Farm and Waterpenny Farm are some of our favorites.
There is nothing like Rappahannock free-range beef, lamb, pork or poultry. Mount Vernon Farm and Wits End Farm, witsendcody@yahoo.com , are definitely worth checking out!
Need a place to stay when you visit? Make reservations at Belle Meade B & B, the House on Water Street, or Fairlea Farm B & B. Heritage House and Conyers House offer unique experiences as well.
.
Then, of course, you must eat!!! You may be aware that Rappahannock is home to the famous and exceptional Inn at Little Washington, but we also boast Griffin Tavern, Thornton River Grille,
E-COW, Pellegatta’s, Rae’s and 24 Crows, to name just a few.
So now you know! Life in and around Rappahannock is not for everyone, only those who like to live well, eat well, enjoy nature and the arts, and live in a community that works (and plays!) together. Life is good here and we invite you to join us.
